Raafat E. F. Fahim, Ph.D.
President and Chief Executive Officer

 

 

Dr. Fahim is President and Chief Executive Officerof Nabi Biopharmaceuticals.  He most recently served as Chief Operating Officer and General Manager. In May 2003, he was named Senior Vice President, Research, Technical and Manufacturing Operations of Nabi Biopharmaceuticals and was Vice President of Vaccine Manufacturing Operations upon joining Nabi Biopharmaceuticals in March 2003.  His career includes 14 years with Aventis Pasteur from 1987 to 2001, where he was instrumental in developing several vaccines from early research to marketed products. During his tenure there, he held the positions of Vice President, Industrial Operations; Vice President, Development, Quality Operations and Manufacturing; Director of Product Development; and head of bacterial vaccines research/research scientist. During the year prior to joining Nabi Biopharmaceuticals, Dr. Fahim was an independent consultant, working with Aventis Pasteur and other companies worldwide on projects that included manufacturing, process improvement, quality operations and regulatory issues. From 2001 to 2002, he served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Lorus Therapeutics, Inc., a Toronto-based biopharmaceutical company focused on the research and development of cancer therapies.

 Dr. Fahim received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Toronto.

Paul Kessler, M.D.
Senior Vice President, Clinical, Medical and Regulatory Affairs
 

Dr. Kessler is Senior Vice President, Clinical, Medical and Regulatory Affairs as of March 2007.  Joining Nabi Biopharmaceuticals in 2005, he most recently served as Vice President, Clinical Research.  He spent over 6 years at GenVec, Inc., a gene therapy company, as Head of Clinical Research where he led clinical efforts in therapeutic angiogenesis, oncology and anti-angiogenesis (macular degeneration).  From 1989 to 1998, he was an Assistant Professor and later Associate Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he conducted gene and cell therapy research; and he was an attending cardiologist on the Heart Failure and Transplant Service.

He earned a B.S. from the University of Pittsburgh, a M.Sc. from the University of London, and an M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He trained in internal medicine and was a research fellow in heart failure at The Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, and was a research and clinical fellow in Cardiology at the Johns Hopkins University, where he was a National Institutes of Heath Physician Scientist Award recipient.  He is the author of 45 peer reviewed research articles and has received 5 issued U.S. patents. 

Matthew Kalnik, Ph.D.
Senior Vice President, Strategic Planning and Business Operations
 

Dr. Kalnik was appointed to the role of Senior Vice President, Strategic Planning and Business Operations in March 2009.  He joined the Company as Vice President, Business Development and Project Management in July 2007. Prior to joining Nabi Biopharmaceuticals, Dr. Kalnik held senior management team positions at innovative biotechnology companies including Executive Vice President, Head of Business Development, at VistaGen Therapeutics and Senior Vice President, Business Development and Licensing, and corporate officer at Genaissance Pharmaceuticals. He has also served in an executive capacity in R&D and commercial development at global pharmaceutical companies Pfizer (Pharmacia) and Daiichi Medical Research including Executive Director, Commercial Development; Sr. Director, Development Technology, Medical Research; and Director, Technology Acquisitions, Discovery Research & Exploratory Development. Dr. Kalnik also founded Hedgerow Consulting and has authored more than a dozen primary research papers.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1984) and an M.A, M.Sc. & Ph.D. in Molecular Biophysics from Columbia University (1989) and conducted his post-doctoral fellowship in Molecular Biology at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California.

 

 

 

Ali E. Fattom Ph.D,
Vice President, Research and Development
 

Dr. Fattom is Vice President of Research and Development for Nabi Biopharmaceuticals. Prior to joining Nabi, Dr. Fattom was a visiting associate at the National Institute of Child Health, part of The National Institutes of Health, until 1991. He joined the Laboratory of Developmental and Molecular Immunity as a Postdoctoral Associate in 1986 working with Drs. J.B. Robbins, R. Schneerson, and W.F. Vann. He developed several vaccines including Pneumococcus conjugate vaccine. He headed the effort for identifying targets and developing a S. aureus vaccine. He joined Univax Biologics in 1991 as a Senior Scientist to pursue the development of conjugate vaccines against bacterial infections including Staphylococci, E.coli, Group B Streptococcus, and Sepsis. During his tenure with Univax Biologics he served as Principal Scientist. Following the merger between Univax and North American Biologics in 1995 to form Nabi Biopharmaceuticals, Dr. Fattom assumed responsibility for other research activities and served as Director, Senior Director, and became Vice President of Research in 2003. Recently he has been responsible for Research and Product Development efforts.

He earned a B.Sc. from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, a M.Sc. in Microbiology from Tel-Aviv University, and a Ph.D. in Microbial Ecology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. From 1983-1986 he held an assistant professorship at Bir-Zeit University, West Bank. Dr. Fattom is author of over 50 peer reviewed publications and more than 10 patents. He is often invited to speak at scientific meetings as an expert in vaccinology.
